27 January – Biodiversity in Sutton

This will be a wide-ranging talk by Rosie Whichelroe, one of Sutton’s Biodiversity officers, about what’s going on to boost biodiversity locally.

24 February – AGM then Conserving Our Chalk Grassland

Peter Wakeham will talk about the work of the Downlands Trust, and will show us photos of the wildflowers found on the North Downs.

31 March – Butterflies in South London

Simon Saville from Butterfly Conservation will show why London is good for butterflies and other wildlife in comparison to the countryside. He will outline the challenges that butterflies face, and indicate what we can do to help them – and other wildlife.

28 April – The Lost Gardens of Carshalton

Sue James will explain how some old gardens have become public parks, others have disappeared into housing, and still others have been preserved after being bought by the council.

26 May – Protecting our Pollinators – Peter Smith

We are living through what has been described as an insect apocalypse with the numbers of insects – including the pollinators on which we depend for 75% of everything we eat – plummeting. We look at the causes of this decline, what is being done to help and what we as individuals can do.

30 June – Micro Greens – Chris and Alistair from Hamsey Greens

Find out why micro greens are such a healthy ‘super food’, and you’ll be amazed at how many different types of vegetables and herbs can be grown as microgreens.  There will be a demonstration and practical activity to sow your own micro greens to take home.  Kits and Hamsey Greens produce will be available for sale.

29 September – Wetlands, Water and Our Gardens by Simon Rose & George Plumptre

In this pre-recorded talk, National Garden Scheme Chief Executive, George Plumptre tells the story of wetlands both in the wider environment and in our gardens.

Venue

Meetings are usually held 7.30-9.00pm on the last Friday of the month (except July, August, December). From 2024, meetings will be held at the Garden Hall at The Lodge, Honeywood Walk, Carshalton, SM5 3NX. Doors open at 7.15.
